Feeling constantly depleted as a parent? A gentle check-in to help you tell the difference between ordinary tiredness, burnout, and something deeper needing healing.

Is It Burnout or Something Deeper? A Gentle Check-In for Tired Parents

Some seasons of parenting are just tiring. Others feel like something has quietly gone out — like you're running on a tank that never quite refills, no matter how much rest you get. If you've wondered whether what you're feeling is ordinary exhaustion or something more, this gentle check-in is for you.

Psychologists Isabelle Roskam and Moïra Mikolajczak, who were among the first researchers to name and study parental burnout as its own condition, describe it as a distinct exhaustion syndrome with four core symptoms worth checking yourself against:

  1. A deep, ongoing exhaustion tied specifically to your role as a parent — not just being busy, but feeling emotionally drained by parenting itself, even before the day has started.
  2. Emotional distance from your own children — going through the motions of caregiving without feeling as connected as you want to be.
  3. A sense of being fed up with parenting in a way that feels hard to admit out loud.
  4. A quiet grief over the contrast between the parent you are right now and the parent you actually want to be.

If several of these feel familiar, you're not a bad parent, and you're not alone — this is a real, researched pattern, not a personal failing. But here's the gentle, honest question underneath the check-in: is it only burnout, or is some of this exhaustion actually old weight you've been carrying long before you became a parent?

In my own life, I couldn't tell the difference for a long time either. I just knew I was exhausted from carrying everything by myself, replaying old hurts on a loop, believing that if I didn't handle it all alone, no one else would. What looked like ordinary tiredness was actually years of unresolved pain wearing the shape of a busy season.

Rest can help burnout. But if what you're carrying is deeper — old wounds, self-dependency, a belief that you have to hold everything together alone — rest alone won't touch it. That part needs healing, not just a nap.

Real freedom starts with an honest look at which one you're actually facing. Both are worth taking seriously. Neither means something is wrong with you.
